Oh AE, my guilty pleasure

I usually really do not like the overpriced preppy stuff with the strange exception of American Eagle. I even have their "All- Access Pass" and it is perpetual wallet suicide.

Anyways, I had a 30% off coupon burning a hole in my pocket, so I managed to find a steal.

This will keep me nice and warm for the rest of winter, I like long tops it helps make me a little taller :)

AE Long dark blue sweater cardigan (org. $44.50) $14.95 w/ 30% gift coupon = $10.46

You are what you wear.

Come on you know it's true. You don't want to believe it right? Idealistically what matters is who you are on the inside....sorry. That is not how the real world works.

It's all about first impressions and making a statement about who you are to others. Think job interviews and how everything you wear matters- right down to the right kind of earrings!

I am 22 years-old and I am just starting to dress my age. For a fresh start I recently emptied out my entire closet and donated lots of clothes I never wear anymore and ones that made me look like a high schooler ( I do not need help with that). I wore mostly jeans and screen Ts to campus and I was asked if I was a first year all four years! :(

It struck me the most when at my desk job, parents come in look straight at me and turn away and head to my co-worker who was slumped in the corner listening to his iPod. SO f***ing frustrating! Our boss did not care what we wore to work, so I'd go in with jeans and Ts. I realized I got more attention and respect as an employee when I dressed older.

I hate that it makes me seem a little shallow or lacking self-confident or whatever. I don't know about you dear reader- but when I feel like I dress good, I feel good.

----
edit:
I'd like to note that I'm not completely dissing and shunning Ts and jeans. I still keep some of my favorite Ts (like my Threadless). I've had to be a little more creative, dress them up with accessories or wear them under a blazer or cardigan.

Belts!

A lot of magazines always say accessories are a good way to dress up something old. I used to never wear belts, but lately I've been trying to start a collection so I put some new flair into an old outfit. I even raided my mom's closet for old belts and found some good stuff!

I fell in love with this belt at H&M the other day, but they didn't have my size so I went to a different H&M and got to use another 20% off coupon :D

H&M belt $9.90 w/ 20% off = $7.92

The big rose clasps are perfect for the coming spring, very classic and feminine. I can imagine wrapping this around a long cardigan or to emphasize a waist on a sundress. I forced myself to put some variety in my wardrobe- I love black way too much.

Shopping Therapy

So the economy has finally caught up with little ol' me. I got laid off last week from my lame-ass part time job- now I have no income. *sigh* what did I do on my first day as an unemployed?

go shopping. yes, I know it seems counterproductive, but you know what...it felt good not to care or stress out about what you can't change. Besides... I was SO on my game yesterday.

Zara Large Tshirt (org. $25) $7.99 + H&M black belt $9.90 w/ 20% off coupon= $7.92

Butternut yellow Maryjanes from Target (org. $16) $4.98

My first Zara purchase- I love the store, never could afford anything, and clearance stuff never have small sizes....they didn't again - I had to get creative!

I am usually a very conservative shoe shopper, I stick to blacks and simple patterned shoes- nothing crazy, but these yellow shoes were my way of stepping out of my comfort zone and they were too cute to resist!

Don't scoff at Target - they actually have some awesome stuff sometimes and buried treasures await in the clearance racks. (I've gotten a corduroy coat for $10 before)

Humble beginnings

Have you ever seen those people where they look so put together and you say to yourself, "Why can't I look like that?"

Have you stood in front of your closet in your skivvies til you get goosebumps from cold and you STILL can't find a single article of clothing that you'd want to wear?

Welcome to my life.

When I look back on my wardrobe past I physically cringe. I tried so hard and tried too hard with all the wrong ideas and wrong trends. I never had a lot of money, I never bought a pair of jeans over $20 until I was in college. I never dreamed I would own anything from even the Gap! I bargain hunted and tried to follow everyone with less fashion resources. I never had older siblings or fashion-savvy friends to guide me either. It's been a long hard journey....

And I'm still learning everyday. I study magazines, catalogs....and I go into stores I never stepped foot in before cuz they were always "too expensive." Hey, I'm all about the "sales" signs and "clearance" racks. My roomy is my fashion-forward idol....*sigh* if only I can pull off what she does!

My shopper persona-
  • I have little self-control (at the moment it just seemed like I couldn't live without buying that skirt!)
  • shopping is therapy..... when I lost my job, I went shopping. =X
  • I'd rather give up a meal and save money to buy something I can wear... saves calories too.
  • I own exactly two pairs of shorts.... I dread shorts cuz I hate showing my legs, but I have made peace with skirts....I love love love skirts now.
  • I love winter fashions way more, cuz I'm a self-declared jacket-whore. I loves the boots, scarves, jackets, and layering!
Thank you for joining me in my journey to fashion!
